Exhibition

curated by Ricarda Vidal and Madeleine Campbell

A video of the exhibition at Somerset House including footage from the performances at the Opening night.

The works in this exhibition were created between March 2021 and July 2022. They are the result of the collaboration between the artists, writers, translators and academics who form part of the experiential translation network. And more often than not, they also draw on the vibrant inspiring atmosphere of public workshops which were conducted online and in person in the many different places we live in.

For Venice, the exhibition was expanded to include artworks which feature in our two edited volumes The Experience of Translation (2024) and The Translation of Experience (2025).

Together we trained our eyes to hear and our ears to see in order to translate from languages we do(n’t) speak, to give voice to drawing and shape to sound.

The Experiential Translation exhibition includes video art, performance, installation, print-making, painting and photography.
Conceived as a travelling exhibition, it was shown in Ledbury and London, UK in 2022, in Łódź, Poland in 2023 and in Venice, Italy in March 2025.
